In March 2010 I was commissioned to photograph the world's largest country for a new guidebook by the British publisher of the acclaimed Insight Guides series. Shot almost exclusively on a basic Nikon P6000 point-and-shoot camera, the project covers vast areas of the country in both the summer and the winter. The idea was to capture the essence of the country and the people living in a selection of cities across it. The small selection of pictures here are from the first shoot in the summer of 2010, which took me as far east as the Ulan Ude in the Republic of Buryatia and south to the Black Sea resort of Sochi. The winter shoot covers Smolensk, Yaroslavl, Vologda, Cherepovets, Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod, Staraya Russa and Pskov. I've also extensively photographed along the Trans-Siberian Railway as well as on the Moscow Metro. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you're interested in licensing any of the 8,000 or so images.
In 2011 the magazine Black + White Photography ran a seven-page piece on the trip. Download and read the PDF file below or scroll down for the colour version.

I'm an English documentary photographer and curator working on several projects in the former Soviet Union that include both the taking and collecting of photographs. My photographic practice focuses on the veiled peculiarities of everyday life and is becoming increasingly concerned with the minefield of Soviet-related history and its contemporary aftermath. My work features in books and magazines, has won competitions, receives funding from a number of sources and is regularly bought by private collectors.
